#31: The Lonely Show

This week I'm with Phil Weiss (KingRat) and we talk about the Nebula Awards, The Young Adult Section and about what it feels like to be very, very alone. I apologize for the sound quality, Wordsy is experimenting with live streaming of audio and video via the web - as well as allowing people to call in on the show (which they didn't). Call in next week! Stay tuned for more details on the official blog.

Well, hilariously, there were SEVERAL comments about how browsing the YA section made people look like predators. I'm so sad you guys missed the comment about the one guy who said, "security guards could carry me out!" I totally wanted a debate about whether that guy was being serious or not. SAD FACE. It wasn't really posted because of the "YA doesn't get enough respect!" but because of how YA is the new SF/F as far as embarrassment goes, but this is easily missed if you, uh, don't look over the stories before the show. Therefore, maybe I should be more explicit in my descriptions!

I am pretty confused, though! The best way to get people to post stories isn't to say "I am tired of this!" Especially when I don't really even see that many posts about YA here? I don't know! YA is pretty much my genre, and I already get nervous about posting as it is. Are YA topics just not wanted, even when they're interesting, just because they deal with the YA quality debate? FOOD FOR THOUGHT.

And people might call in to your show if they understood anything about being on podcasts, which I for one, don't. :D

You didn't post because YA doesn't get respect, but Cory Doctorow kind of did. "People aren't going into the YA section!" "Little-regarded" is the term he used. His phrasing makes it out to be a plea for respect, instead of something like "holy crap! look at all the great YA SF that's out now!"

I can't remember who it was that also posted about YA this past week (not on Wordsy that I recall), but he noted that YA Fantasy is outselling Adult Fantasy 4 to 1, and YA SF outsold Adult SF 3 to 2. So he's kind of wrong that it isn't getting any regard. It just might not be getting any regard from his friends. But lots of people are, or they wouldn't be buying the books. Hadn't read that blog entry when we did the podcast. I think it made SF Signal and that's how I got to it.

Podcasting is basically audio blogging. Someone records something and puts up the recording periodically. A lot are something like various forms of radio shows, whether it's a music show, a panel discussion (I think this is what Hans is trying for), or something like Rush Limbaugh ranting for 30 minutes straight on his own. "podcasting" because there is software that automatically downloads it to an iPod, and Adam Curry (I think that's who popularized the form) called it podcasting way back when. Call in at the recording time (10 am PST Sunday this coming week, I believe) and tell me I'm an idiot if I get the story wrong. I did briefly read it before the show, but I only read the first 5 or so comments. Hans and I don't disagree enough. If you have Skype, Hans can probably hook you in that way.

I would love for anyone to call in and call me an idiot. That's pretty much my goal now on the podcast. And a panel discussion would be nice, yes :-)

You just use your phone to call the number and you're on! Or use skype (drop me an email, and we'll hook up).
