Amazon.com wants you to buy things using your mobile phone, especially if you are all thumbs. On Wednesday, the e-commerce company introduced a new service called TextBuyIt that lets customers with Amazon accounts find and buy products through Amazon's Web site.

I can't see ever using this myself, but I can see what they are trying to do. Bring your mobile phone into Barnes & Noble. Now you don't have to wonder if you can get a better price at Amazon.

Using SMS for micropayments is something that has been used over here for almost ten years but never for buying books AFAIK, mostly for buying ringtones and other cellphone shit (it's mostly shit) as well as subscriptions to teen community websites. It's been very popular with companies that target young adults who do not have regular income and the age to hold a credit or debit card. The disadvantage for the merchant is that the cellphone service provider eats like 50% of the charge.
