Apparently not, more's the pity. Some people are saying that Rushdie shouldn't have accepted the honour because he's not exactly a big fan of Britian. Some are saying they should never have offered it, for obvious reasons. I'm thinking they made a big mistake...if it wasn't deliberately done.

Seriously. The honour is supposed to be given not only for merit--literary or otherwise--but for making a positive contribution to the society. I don't know about the merit part, but I sincerely doubt any positive contribution, since he got pissed off and left Britain after they had saved his butt during the fatwa. The Brits say it's to honor Muslims, but I can think of at least one other Muslim writer who would have been a better choice. It's all politics, most likely.
If they can give a knighthood to Mick Jagger, there's no telling who's gonna make the list.
