Can Smart Girls be Popular, too?

Come on . . . join the social experiment!

Remember that either/or question “would you rather be pretty or smart?” The implication, of course, was that pretty girls where popular . . . smart girls where not.

“But can an aspiring professor/freelance writer compete in a saturated blogospehre? Can a ’smart’ blog about writing and literature compete with ’sexy’ celeb news and political scandal?”

No and no. I hate to say it, but “smart” and “popular” are almost mutually exclusive.

I applaud your efforts and your intentions, but I don’t think it’s possible to be popular and intelligent at the same time for the simple reason that most people are stupid and enjoy content that is the same.

I applaud your appeal for equality among genders, but I don’t think this is a feminist issue. You see, smart blogs with witty content are less popular than sensationalist garbage whether they were written by a man or a woman. Intelligent and thought provoking content with a literary bend will lose ground to sex and celebrity every time, regardless of the gender of the author. This is a reality that permeates all aspects of society… it’s just a function of the fact that the middle of the road, plain vanilla, mainstream masses will ALWAYS flock to mediocrity and if you’re too smart, they’ll ignore you.

“Remember that either/or question “would you rather be pretty or smart?” The implication, of course, was that pretty girls where popular . . . smart girls where not. ”

To be honest, I see the same dichotomy in the world of men all the time. Hence, the “jock versus nerd” stereotype. Would you rather be a badass or a bookworm? Would you rather be a stud or a geek? The implication there is that if you’re cool and popular, you’re not overly booky, and if you’re too nerdy you’re not attractive.

Again, I don’t see it as a gender issue, because the implication that attractiveness and stupidity go hand in hand is prevalent to both genders. The issue at hand is “is it possible to be smart and popular at the same time EVER?”

I would love to be proven wrong. I wish you nothing but the best, because your heart seems to be in the right place. Good luck and please, make me eat my words.

Best.

I don’t agree that pretty girls are more popular. Pretty girls get the looks, but unless she is smart the “looks” are nothing more than a painting on the wall, those that look don’t really see her.
A smart girl gets seen; when people look at her they see her. When she speaks they hear her. An overly attractive girl often has to work harder and be twice as smart to be considered half as intelligent.
The truth is intelligent girls are somewhat more beautiful. A pretty “chicki babe” that doesn’t have much going on upstairs tends to look kind of blank and plain. An intelligent girl looks prettier with more life in her expression.
As far as the reply goes that asks to be proven wrong that it’s not possible to be smart and popular at the same time,- wrong ,wrong ,wrong
Meet my friend “Cashie” as one example. http://360.yahoo.com/profile-BszR2iIib6N9B.foBTHyEW4-?cq=1

Nonsense, really.

Yes, most really popular content out there is quite void.
Yes, the masses are generally 'not smart'.

But there is definitely good content out there which also attracts mass attention. Granted, it may not always be the 'smart aspects' which the masses will relate to.

Even Shakespeare wrote both bawdy and smart into each and every play so his entire audience could relate: the people on the ground and those in the higher places. He was quite popular in his time I believe.

Even something like Harry Potter is actually quite full of interesting references, if you're willing to look. Not great literature, but not 'dumb' either. Again, I agree, most people don't get them, but they're there. Movies: think of American Beauty, Pulp Fiction, or further back: all Hitchcock movies. Smart...Popular.

Then again, there's your blog. It has a niche subject. Now niches and popular...THOSE are mutually exclusive. Nothing to do with smart as far as I'm concerned.

The jump from content to girls I don't get, but I'll state for the record that I consider my wife both pretty and smart.

Ahhh wellwisher, You caught me pandering. LOL. Smart VS Popular, just a little cliche copy to get a few new people to take a peek.
