First it was video games, and then it was the internet, now free newspapers on the subways are getting the blame for poor reading habits. They are “exacting a heavy toll from literate culture.” And, no, the writer is not a snob, thank you.

Ah yes, someone is standing over those poor defenseless commuters with a big stick, forcing them to read those awful newspapers. How frightful. Therefore, we should take a big stick and beat the poor, unfortunate fellow who's trying to eke out a measly existence by standing in the crowded, dirty, smelly subway all day distributing them. Tell him to get a dignified and rewarding job...like maybe a lawyer or doctor or professor...and stop trying to personally poison the culture of the more fortunate. And whilst we're at it, maybe we should beat the people who clean the toilets and pick up the garbage too. But we're not a snob, no. Oh the genius of the 'literate'.
There is no thief like a bad book

Well there's no coincidence this person writes for The Guardian... after all, we all want to keep our jobs and keep getting paychecks...
