Greener Books on the Way

“Days after the International Panel on Climate Change published its latest and most alarming report, the books trade has taken a step towards a greener future, setting a target of a 10% reduction in carbon footprint from 2006 levels by 2015.” Call me cynical, but I think they could care less about the environment and are just caving to readers’ pressure in order to protect their sales.

I doubt it. The book buying public thinks of cars and gas and oil and not so much about books when they think of "carbon footprint."

Also, "carbon footprint" gets my nomination for the most overused buzzphrase this year.

I'm not so sure. I think that people who are into environmental issues tend to think about many more aspects of it than just their cars, and people who read a lot are more apt to be more aware. The e-reader issue alone has brought environmental discussions to the fore, so that each day more people/readers are learning that publishing is an environmental concern. Consumers can bring a lot of pressure to bear on companies, and I believe there's been a fair amount of that from people. The program is a good thing, mind you, but I just feel that if there wasn't any pressure, they wouldn't give a damn. The money's the thing....popular opinion counts, and not doing anything is bad PR.
