Ay caramba! Chabon isn't even writing science fiction but he's one awesome writer. I haven't read this particular book yet, but I loved The Amazing Adventures of Kavaliers and Clay, a book for which Chabon was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

This one is alternative history.

I think this win is awesome because for once science fiction is recognizing great writing that isn't by "one of their own." If it wants to move into the mainstream, it needs to do this. It doesn't hurt that Chabon isn't afraid of the science fiction label like Atwood is.

IIRC Chabon collaborated with Sam Raimi on the Spiderman 2 movie screenplay. Chabon is a long-time fan of comics and "pulp", thus the setting and themes of Kavalier and Clay. I don't think he fears being associated with what some uptights might refer to as "low fiction".
