Product Placement in Your Reading

How do you feel about product placement in books? Is it okay for authors to make a buck by having their characters drink Coke or wear Cover Girl makeup? Or does it cheapen the story and the writer? It’s something to think about, as product placement in books is becoming rather prevalent these days.

I don't see anything wrong with product placement in your writing, as long as it's something as refreshing as an ice cold Coca-Cola. When you need a quick pick-up in the middle of the morning, nothing does it quite like Coke. It's the real thing.

What about product placement in textbooks for kids? We are exposed to advertising every day in newspapers and magazines still we choose to read such publications. The same applies to books. However I do not think that kids should involuntarily be subject to advertising and commercial exploitation.
