Submitted by mwilliams on Wed, 2008-02-20 20:14.According to Nick Fraser, Richard Yates is the great forgotten novelist of 20th-century America, ranking right up there with Fitzgerald and Hemingway, and his novel Revolutionary Road is a must read. Yates’ works are now being resurrected and reissued, even made in to films, as his art is being rediscovered and recognized by the literary world.

It’s funny how often we wait for great writers/artists to die in poverty and ignominy before we acknowledge how great they really were. We seem to relish allowing them to think themselves failures to the end and manage to convince ourselves that posthumous stature can somehow mean something to them.
