Riot police were out in force yesterday for the opening of the annual Paris book fair in an effort to prevent trouble at a show that has become embroiled in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

An Islamic cultural organization is urging its 50 member states to boycott the annual international book fair in Paris because the fair is honouring Israeli literature.

Oh brother.

This year the California Antiquarian Book Fair is hosting a ‘Great Books from Great Institutions’ exhibition that book lovers in the area will not want to miss. The exhibit features rarely seen books, manuscripts and other materials from the vast archives of Southern California’s university library collections. The fair runs from Friday February 15 through Sunday February 17th.

New York Is Book Country, which has been on hiatus for the past three years, is being revived in 2008…on the same day as the Brooklyn Book Festival. Festival organizers are in an uproar over what they perceive as a malicious breach of publishing protocol.

The 20th annual Seattle Book Fair is scheduled for October 13th and 14th at the Seattle Pavilion. There will be nearly 100 exhibitors at the event, and for anyone nearby it will be a great chance to see/purchase some fine books, manuscripts and other book related items.

Just in case anyone’s going to be—or is lucky enough to live—in California. This fair sounds amazing…“300 participating authors, 12 stages with author panels and special guests, live storytelling, theater, poetry and performances and writing workshops, and over 100 exhibitors hosting activities”.
