In an unusual and bold decision, a Belgian librarian was awarded a 12.5K euro art prize for participating in the Google books project.

Readers of Google’s scanned books were surprised to discover large pieces of the texts obscured by hands wearing pink finger condoms. Google says it was their early efforts and that the technology has been bumped up a notch to avoid this handiwork in future.

It does object where the books are still protected today by copyright: the book industry says that it has the exclusive rights to use such books for commercial purposes. So far the industry has not managed to stop Google in the courts.
