In a year of pro-atheism books, Anthony Flew wrote a book on his conversion from atheism to deism. Or did he? His co-author Roy Abraham Varghese has been accused of putting words into Flew's mouth, taking advantage of his decreasing mental condition. This book review notes some oddities in the book that indicate sloppy work at least. More on the controversy can be found at Wikipedia.

Oh no... not another one. Can't we just get over the whole issue and just skip the whole god problem for once? God or no god, it's just irrelevant, we got starvation, disease, lack of pure water, climate change, crime, need for democracy, lack of women's rights, need for more and better education and tons of other things to spend energy on! Regardless of state of existence, god won't fix these issues for us so it's time we count him (or her, or it) out of the picture!
As for most notorious atheist, I'd have to say that's Richard Dawkins.
I can certainly thing of quite a few more notorious atheists than Flew, though he's fairly well-known.
But as to your contention that we have more important things to think about that god/not-god, why are we on a book site then? There's lots of not-exactly-life-threatening things going on that I care about. Plus, you'll not convince the fundamentalists (as well as some members of other sects) that god can be counted out.

We are here because books are important. Knowledge is important and books are still the main carrier of knowledge and information. Books are highly relevant, since they're one of the cures for some of the problems on this planet, problems of ignorance, political suppression and lack of education.
Furthermore, as far as I know, god didn't even write a book. The Bible is a human artifact, evolved apes twisting "divine words" into servering their own needs and desires.
What a strange thing to say on Christmas Eve :)
